Jewelry designing tips.
1- Try to keep your design idea to as few as possible, because too many designs or styles will only confuse your creative piece of jewelry. Start out with a grouping of like-kind styles, such as beads, free form, traditional, modern, etc., then start narrowing your selection down to 2 or 3 basic designs.
2- Always start with the major center gemstone. The center attraction is the point where all the attention is drawn. Doesn't matter if it's a diamond or colored stone, just select the major focal point where the eye will be drawn to.
3- In case of two or more gem stones as center pieces, needs more attention to the design not to become too busy and lose it's purpose. Same size center stones will not compliment each other, it's better select the stone that will bring out brilliance to establish balance.
4- Size and shape doesn't always matter. Usually a good rule is anything over 0.25 carat in weight are the best for overall designing.
5- As much as "keeping it simple" it'll keep your design from becoming scattered or busy. The less you set on your design the better. The mind's eye likes to seek out balance and at this point the less is actually more.
6- Before you start your design, be patient and start collecting ideas by looking up some fashion magazines or internet jewelry sites or any other avenue that can offer up ideas. Your idea starts from something already retrieved in your mind , when you'll start drawing your collection of experience.
7- There are three formations to create a great designer piece.
1st. Center gem stone.
2nd. Mounting design.
3rd. Accent gemstones or complements.
The center gem stone preferred to be selected first so that all other pieces can take shape. The mounting top design will follow the shape of the center stone to have continuity and a form establishment. Then the surrounding or accent of stones will tie everything together to create a special piece. If the design process appears very basic and ones established then higher or advanced techniques can be added.
8- Balancing between the center stone shape and the mounting top will help your creative taste. Look for shapes that fit with your center stone.
9- Accent or side stones should allow the center gemstone to radiate over the accent finish. Try to keep the balance by not gracefully overwhelming accent stones that will take the attention from the center gemstone
10-Color of precious metal is somewhat important. Many designers these days attaining great color combinations through different techniques. Before you start selecting the color of the precious metal you want to use, try to pay attention while browsing in catalogs or over the Internet how to attain the precious metal color harmony with your center gemstone color.
11-Select a design style that fits your personality and taste. The piece should make a statement you can live with. If you have a large or fancy cut gemstone, try to develop your personality around it. You can still develop a creative design, using the above methods in establishing your likes and dislikes. One design could create a hundred different ways, so be patient and go for your particular perfection. Presentation and balance is what you should achieve from a piece.
12-Another important step is locating a designer that can communicate with you on the design. A good craftsman can help you develop a design and consult with you on different settings or finishing techniques. It is very important that your craftsman has the ability to create using the above mentioned steps. 13-As with any other technical profession, the designer or craftsman that you select should have tools to aid in his/her presentation. Mountings or pictures of mountings all help in bringing the idea to visual life. Or technical tools that require skill and imagination. This is a highly graphic designing computer. The computer allows the jeweler to put collective ideas onto a computer "canvas" and create the design. This technical innovation will become the standard for the future because it answers all of your designing concerns and draws up your finished piece 3-dimensional Rendered with gold and gemstones color.
14-After the drawing is created and agreed on, the next step should be to wax building then casting the precious metal, then cleaning and pre polishing before the setting stage. The setting of all gemstones will be the next most important area of concern. Not all setting work is the same and only a highly skilled diamond setters should be commissioned to do this area of work. The setting of stones around mounting is what completes the design allowing balance, texture and depth to come together.
15-Many pieces of glorious jewelry are great to look at but will not last well over prolong periods of time. There are some attractive designer pieces that have been manufactured overseas, for price or mark-up reasons, been made of fragilely light weight mountings with very thin setting prongs that needs extensive repair work after very short period of time. Always think of the wear factor when selecting a design. Designs should include thicker or slightly heavier mountings, hinges or links. All areas should be substantial and settings should be heavier to last for more years to come.
